Tribute to Billy Manson, Halkirk
We share a fitting tribute (below) to not just a Halkirk United stalwart, but a North Caledonian League stalwart, in William “Beillie” Manson.
On behalf of the North Caledonian League, I send condolences to all Billy’s family and friends.
On a personal note, I would echo the words from Ewan (McElroy) about Billy becoming a friend.
For many years I’d get the Saturday evening call from him looking for results.
As the years went on technology in the form of text messages and then social media made phone calls obsolete but Billy still would occasionally ring for a result, but ultimately it was for a blether and to check I was doing okay in my personal life.
Billy was a great source of wisdom, expertise and a sounding board when the football got tricky, many others could also testify to that.
RIP Billy.

From Halkirk United:
Halkirk United are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of William “Beillie” Manson: a local footballing legend, Halkirk United stalwart and linchpin of the local community.
Others have already noted how successful Beillie was as a player, manager, secretary and chairman, and have noted his life-long service to football in Caithness. A remarkable man, Beillie was integral in the formation of Halkirk United, and spearheaded their introduction into the North Caledonian League. Beillie oversaw a period of unprecedented success at Halkirk United, leading them to 5 league titles, and lifting he North Caley League Cup 3 times, as well as many other cup successes. Beillie was also part of a highly successful time at Halkirk FC (summer) as manager, winning countless trophies, including the Highland Amateur on 2 separate occasions. Even after his managerial retirement, Beillie always took the time to speak with both new and old players on a regular basis, considering everyone part of the Halkirk United family.
We would also like to highlight Beillie’s service to the wider Halkirk community and in particular the support he offered to young people, whether in football or in their daily lives. In a similar vein, Beillie was also dedicated servant to the voluntary work in the area with multiple organisations - The Heritage Centre, Halkirk Village Council, Gala and Halkirk Games to name but a few. This was typical of Beillie’s commitment to and enthusiasm for Halkirk.
Through all of this, Beillie was a devoted family man – a loving father to Lynne and a devoted grandad and brother.
Current manager Ewan McElroy commented “To me, he was the main reason I started managing a team in winter football and although he started out as practically my boss, he very quickly became a good friend to me and latterly to my young family as well. His personal qualities shone through in every aspect of his life, whether on the field or on the streets of Halkirk, where his name will be remembered for many years”
All at the club send their heartfelt condolences to Beillie’s family and friends at this sad time.
